Personal Narrative

Please accept this letter as my tenure solicitation. My name is Lisseth Herrera, this is my 4th year in the Department of Education. I am a Spanish teacher at Marine Park. Language is something that I have always been passionate about.

I have worked in two different schools and there are many things I can share. Currently, I am a lead teacher in my department as well as the Foreign Language Facilitator for district 22.

I have a master’s in Administrative Educational Leadership. I believe I have a lot to offer. The Spanish language has been my first language and I always needed it to speak with my family. I arrived in the United States from El Salvador as a middle schooler.

I did not have legal status in the country until I became a dreamer and was given work permission under DACA. I had to work two full time jobs, while studying full time at a local public college to pay my own way as an undergraduate and graduate student.

Educational Philosophy

Becoming a teacher was one of the most important decisions I made in my life. Since I was a kid, in elementary, junior and high school I always liked to help classmates that did not understand the lesson. When I entered college, one of my Spanish teachers recommended that I join a nonprofit organization that teaches low income immigrants that did not know how to read and write Spanish. These people never have the opportunity to attend school back in their country because of their socioeconomic status and their niche (place or position that is beneficial for the person).

My mission is that every student should have the opportunity to achieve their best. Therefore, every minute in the classroom counI strongly believe I could always learn and become a better teacher. Teaching is a lot of responsibility, however being a pedagogue it comes from the heart.

Nothing is more rewarding than the feeling of knowing that with your knowledge, time and dedication, you are capable of changing someone's life.

I remember my first-grade teacher because she was a great person and a phenomenal pedagogue. I want my students to have a positive experience and remember me as the teacher that taught them Spanish. Also, how that knowledge could be transferred to other courses and most importantly in real life.ts. Students use that time to work on their listening, speaking skills and writing skills. That could be complete with the three modes of communication, interpretative, interpersonal and presentational.

As a foreign language teacher, I’m responsible for creating a journal that helps me keep track of all students’ academic and behavior records. This is important for me because it creates a system in which I could keep organized the student improvement throughout the year, and it also helps me to identify students that are lacking or need extra help. The best way to help the students is by creating an action plan in which the parents are aware, and they could contribute, creating a big impact on the students’ learning. I keep all students’ work organized into different folders for each grade, which helps the student know where they are standing. If they need to make up for any missing work, they could always do so.

Scholarship

It was Fred Jones that once said, “There is no best method, there are different methods for different children in different circumstances.” I strongly agree, and every year that I spend in a classroom setting I agree even more. After receiving the teaching license, I had spent the last four years learning from my coworkers and different professors.

During my graduate studies I discovered different methods and theories that help teachers during instruction time. However, the theory that best adapts to my teaching style is Responsibility Training through Incentive Systems by Fred Jones’ Skill Cluster (Charles, 2005). The theory consists of different steps. First, Preferred activity time. Which is defined as creating an activity that the student enjoys, such as learning games and enrichment activities.

Second, Motivation, there are two kinds of motivations, intrinsic motivation that comes from internal and extrinsic motivation, when outside forces are creating the motivation.

The three key terms to understand discipline with dignity are “Prevention, action and solution”. Principles are essentials for humanity; Dignity is one of them, and needs to be applied for everyone, including students. Curwin and Mendlers theory explains how every student needs to be treated with dignity just like any other person in the school building. Based on the behavior demonstrated by students in different classes, the theory Discipline with Dignity is a great philosophy to use in the classroom.

The idea of one size fits all does not apply into a classroom. Based on recent researchers, professionals talk about how important it is for parents to speak to their kids like young adults, because kids develop their brain and cognitive skills at a faster rate when this approach is applied. Personal identity is the first component of discipline with dignity, which can be met through a positive self-image.

To implement this principle, I use active learning by John Dewey in his book Democracy and Education. Students learn best from experience, which also contributes to a positive self-image. Students have the power to identify themselves to different identities depending on the situation. Students can act differently with peers and the teacher.

Assessment

Before designing a lesson, I write goals that are aligned with the school's mission. Then, I combined them with what needs to be accomplished by the end of the marking period/unit. Having that in mind plus information about the school population, which is composed of Asian, Hispanic, African-American and White students.

Developing a performance assessment, based on the three years’ teaching as a Spanish teacher. I have learned that there are many steps that need to be followed in order to create a good evaluation system that will help the teacher and the student move forward. Before designing an assessment, I make sure to answer this question: Why am I assessing my students? this help me create a map or a main goal. Which helps me understand what I need to measure from the students’ knowledge.

Did they absorb all the material needed to continue learning in the following lesson or unit?

After I gather the results of the assessment, based on the students' average I know if they are going in the right track or there are points or ideas that need to be clear in order to master the task. With these guidelines, the student is not only getting benefits, it also helps the teacher to determine if the procedures or methods that he uses are working or there is something that needs to be enhanced. Another important point that I learned is the importance of linking the standards through assessment to curriculum and instruction. Teachers need to make sure that the lesson does not completely focus on grammar.

Learning a new language is more than learning the structure of the language. Is learning how to use the target language in a real life situation. Another important point is to use performance assessment to provide useful feedback and motivation to students.

I also use the three modes, interpretive interpersonal and presentational to assess students. The use of the three modes is very important in every single lesson. This allows the students to practice the language like real-life situations. Students will be able to hear themselves speak the language and hear the peers use the language to communicate an idea or a need just like they would use if they were in another country.

Impact on Student Learning

I attended the conference “NERDCAMPLI 2017 ANNUAL BOOK LOVE EVENT” on Saturday November 4, 2017. The purpose of this conference was to present future and current teachers with new ideas on how to incorporate books in the different classroom and subjects using technology.

How going to the conference helps me plan the lesson? Using cellphones, computers or iPads in a classroom setting is a great tool.  Allows the teacher and the students to incorporate videos, music, newspaper and tutorials in the target language.

These tools can be easily accessed by students, through APPs that give access to thousands of books instantly, with just a click is so easy and convenient. In addition, it enables students not just to read but also to see and hear authentic material from books in different settings, like family reunions, holidays and social events. Furthermore, these apps offer differentiation for all types of students and their needs. One example is an incorporated dictionary that allows students to search for a word that they don’t understand. Which makes comprehension an easy task. allowing students to adapt the vocabulary complexity to their learning reading levels and vocabulary complexity.

Not just students with IEPs are positively affected by the incorporation of technology also section 504. Students with low sight could enlarge letters or blind students can listen to an audiobook.

Every student is important in my class, for that reason every time I design a lesson. I use authentic material that will teach more than grammar, but also will teach critical thinking and culture. In a unit about food, after working on the interpretative task about a documentary named “la feria gastronomica in Peru”. I collected and graded all papers from every student and designed a graph that will help me understand where the class stands as a whole.

Impact on Student Learning

  • Grade Scale

The results show me that 92% of the students were able to master the task, which for me it’s a great thing. But, as a teacher, the goal is to have 100% of all students mastering the task. For that reason, I started to look at each student's work, to create a strategy that will help me create a plan that will help each student.

  • Student Grades

This student got an 85 because the students master the use of language in an interpretative mode. The student demonstrates knowledge from the previous lesson and was able to match the different descriptive adjectives with the pictures presented and the video.

  • Student Presentation

This student got a 100 because the students master the use of language in a presentational mode. The student demonstrates knowledge from the previous lesson and was able to know words, put them together, create paragraphs and make an essay. This demonstrates the knowledge they have when retaining information, processing information, and creating an essay out of it. This task was to write an essay of 250 words within 38 minutes without the use of dictionaries, nor notes, nor cell phones. It was all straight from their brains. I find it extremely challenging because they are all new to Spanish. They are able to express themselves and it is very rewarding.

Community

To have a successful school, the teacher, parents and the community need to be involved and contribute to its growth. As a Spanish teacher over the past year, I have worked with parents who need translation. Some Immigrant parents don’t participate in school activities or assemblies mostly due to conflicting work schedules, which required them to work longer than usual hours to make lower than average wages. The language deficiency was also a contributing factor which prevented parents of immigrant children from participating during parent-teacher conferences, even when a translator is present during these events.

I have attended every parent-teacher conference since I started working. Every single conference brings new challenges and opportunities for growth. When I was a student going to a parent-teacher conference, all of them brought me joy. I knew I did well and I was going to get a reward because my teachers always give positive feedback to my parents regarding my behavior and academic standing. However, now it’s different as the teacher, I want to have great communication in which parents are free to express their concerns and ideas. I teach nine classes. I knew there was going to be a long day talking to each of the parents.

The first parent, it took me more than 4 minutes which was the standard time to spend with each parent. I wanted to answer all the questions that the parents have and also, I wanted to be able to manage the time in the best way possible.

Once I spoke with the first parent. The second parent was a Spanish speaker. She greets me in Spanish, which makes me feel good because as a Spanish teacher I want to reflect on myself as a multilingual person, for that reason in college I took 2 years of Italian and one in Portuguese. In 2 minutes and half I was able to resume the student's progress and give some recommendations to do better in class.

Conclusion

It was Booker T Washington that once said, Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as the obstacles which he has overcome. Since my first year of teaching, I have experienced different situations where everything I learned in school and with previous classes did not work. But also discovered that teachers are in a prime position to have a life-lasting effect in students’ lives.

The difference between a positive educational experience and a lackluster one could help shape the outlook that a student has for the future, such as pursuing post-secondary education, his contribution to society as an active element in the workforce, the ability of such individuals to end perpetual habits and cycles with socioeconomic negative connotations when starting his own family.

Schooling is a system of structures, methods, and resources put in place to organize and distribute content aimed at providing education to the students. Webster’s Dictionary defines learning as “the basics in the first years of school.” Education is the result or culmination of a long process of learning.
